Upon 8 March this year, the Amsterdam Mixed Choir gave a overall performance of Bach’ s St Steve Passion in the city’ s Concertgebouw auditorium. It was one of the last main classical concerts to be held within the Netherlands before the country went into Covid-19 lockdown.

The overall performance had unexpected consequences. Days later on, singers began to sicken, one by one, till 102 of 130 choristers got fallen ill with Covid-19. One particular 78-year-old died, as did 3 partners of choir members; performers ended up in intensive care; plus conductor Paul Valk displayed severe symptoms.
