Former President George W. Rose bush released a statement on George Floyd’ s death and the following Black Lifestyles Matter protests.
He said via George Watts. Bush Presidential Center site which he was “ anguished by the challenging suffocation of George Floyd” plus called it a “ power when protesters, protected by accountable law enforcement, march for a better upcoming. ”
The site has crashed after the former president launched his statement. Upon accessing the website, users are now met with a message that says, “ We are experiencing specialized difficulties and will be back shortly. ”
Floyd died right after Derek Chauvin, who was an official at the time, put his knee upon Floyd’ s neck for almost 9 minutes. Floyd, a Black guy, repeatedly told the officer “ I can’ t breathe” plus became unresponsive six minutes within. Floyd was later pronounced lifeless. Chauvin has since been billed with murder.
“ This tragedy— in a long number of similar tragedies— raises a long past due question: How do we end systemic racism in our society? The only way to find out ourselves in a true light would be to listen to the voices of a lot of who are hurting and grieving, ” Bush said in his statement.
Floyd’ s death started worldwide protests against systematic racism and police brutality pervasive within police forces across the country. Police are now being accused of only escalating— and perhaps, instigating— violent protests.
Bush has long been criticized for its administration’ s response to Hurricane Katrina, which largely affected the Dark community. And, in its 2015 “ Grading the Presidents on Competition, ” Politico gave Bush the C- grade.
Bush’ s statement comes after former Chief executive Barack Obama released one of his own on May 29, saying, “ This shouldn’ t be ‘ normal’ in 2020 America. ” The two former presidents’ statements really are a stark contrast to how Chief executive Donald Trump has handled Floyd’ s death and the protests. They have made numerous controversial remarks about the protests, including “ When the looting starts, the shooting starts” plus threatening to deploy “ greatly armed” military forces. He has already been criticized for doing little in order to “ unite the nation, ” which is often seen as the president’ s i9000 role.
